Where Laminated Glass Provides Functional Safety

When entering a modern day commercial, residential, or educational building, what is one constant element most people may not consider? Glass. While facades are usually enclosed with an astonishing amount of glass, we sometimes forget the architectural, yet functional elements of added heavy, laminated glass like handrails and balustrades.

Heavy laminated glass provides openness in traditionally closed spaces, like stair railings, balconies, terrace enclosures, mezzanines, and observation decks. They promote openness, elegance, and access to natural light while still providing safety.

Railings and Balustrades

A railing or balustrade is a protective system that is designed to prevent falls. These applications are usually composed of laminated glass because it offers safety and structural performance. According to building code (IBC) Section 2406, glass in handrails and guards must be laminated and constructed from fully tempered or heat-strengthened glass when above ground level. If a lite experiences damage, the interlayer helps maintain the integrity of the assembly while reducing the likelihood of glass fallout.

Customization

Customization makes installation seamless. The glass units arrive from Press Glass with fabricated CNC cutouts, notches, holes, or unique shapes suited for the selected hardware system and installation location.

Fabrication and Assembly

 Handrails and balustrades require higher structural performance. To achieve optimal structural integrity, laminated glass can be combined with heat-strengthened or tempered glass and high-performance ionoplast(SG) interlayers. The result is a system that offers transparency without compromising safety.

The most common assembly is a framed balustrade system where glass panels may be as thick as 3/4”. These are usually laminated and secured by hardware such as continuous top and bottom rails in combination with side clips or side rails. Where minimalism is key, there are assemblies featuring two exposed sides with polished edges. After fabrication and assembly, it is here that glass becomes the focal point while providing the same safety as a traditional handrail system made of wood or metal.
